Closeboard (featheredge)
Strongest and longest lasting. Vertical featheredge boards on horizontal arris rails. Stands up to wind better than panel fencing because there are no rigid panels to flex.
Closeboard, lap, panel and picket fencing fitted with concrete posts and concrete gravel boards.
Fencing is a job where corners get cut more than any other in landscaping. Wooden posts hammered into soft ground last about five years before they snap at the base in a winter storm. Done properly, with concrete posts set in concrete and concrete gravel boards taking the soil contact, a fence will stand for twenty years and only need new boards now and then.
I walk the boundary, check who owns the fence (the deeds tell you, not the side the posts are on), and measure up. I'll flag any tree roots or obstacles that might affect post positions.
Itemised by linear metre, so you can see exactly what you're paying for. Disposal of the old fence is included in the price.
Old fence comes out first. Posts set in concrete, left overnight to set. Gravel boards and boards fitted the next day. Cap rail at the end. Most 20 metre runs take two to three days.
All offcuts and old fence panels taken away the same day they're produced. I don't leave a pile of debris over the weekend.
Quotes are itemised, but here's what moves the number up or down.
For honest indicative ranges, see the pricing guide.
A 15 to 20 metre fence takes two to three days. Longer runs and complex boundaries scale from there.
Concrete posts and concrete gravel boards need nothing. Wooden featheredge or panels can be left to weather to a silver grey, or painted/stained every two to three years if you want them to stay one colour. Trellis benefits from a yearly check for splits.
Alfie laid a porcelain patio for us in March. Turned up when he said he would, kept the place tidy, and finished a day early. The patio looks great and we've had no issues with drainage even after a heavy weekend of rain.
We needed about 25 metres of fencing replacing after a storm took the old one out. Alfie quoted on the day, came back the following week and finished in two days. Concrete posts and gravel boards as standard, no shortcuts.
Brilliant from start to finish. Alfie listened to what we wanted, came back with a plan that was way better than anything we'd thought of, and built it over four weeks. The aftercare guide he left was really useful too.
Composite deck installed on a sloping garden. Alfie sorted out the levels properly and built a frame that feels rock solid. Communication was clear throughout and the price was fair.
Sandstone patio and a low retaining wall. Alfie was the only person who quoted who actually noticed the slope of our garden meant the patio would need a step in the middle. The detail in his work shows.
Ten metres of closeboard fencing along a tricky boundary with a tree. Alfie worked around the roots without damaging the tree and left the run dead straight. Tidy job.

It's not always the side the posts are on, despite what people say. The deeds for your house will tell you which boundaries are yours. If yours and your neighbour's are unclear, it's worth a friendly conversation before any work starts.
Without planning permission, two metres on rear and side boundaries, one metre on a boundary that fronts a road. Listed buildings and conservation areas have stricter rules. I'll flag anything that needs a check.
Concrete posts plus concrete gravel boards last twenty plus years. The wooden boards on top last ten to fifteen depending on exposure. Wooden posts in the ground last five to seven, which is why I won't fit them.
Closeboard if you want the strongest, longest lasting fence and the appearance suits your garden. Lap panels if you want a budget friendly fence that goes up quickly and looks neat. Both are fine when done properly.
Yes, included in every quote. I take everything to a registered waste transfer station and provide the receipt if you want it.
Yes, gates with matching boards or in plain timber, built to the same height as the fence with proper hinges and a drop bolt. Made on site so they fit the gap exactly.
