How much does it cost?

Indicative ranges. Every job is quoted individually after a free site visit.

There's no honest one-size-fits-all answer to "how much does a patio cost?". The price depends on the materials, the state of the existing ground, access to the garden, the size of the job, and so on. The ranges below are useful as a sanity check before you ask for a quote, not as a fixed price list.

Patios

For a typical 20 to 30 square metre patio in SW London with a Type 1 sub base and proper falls:

  • Concrete or reconstituted stone £100 to £150 per m²
  • Indian sandstone £140 to £190 per m²
  • Granite £170 to £220 per m²
  • Porcelain £190 to £260 per m²

Add for: lifting an existing patio (£20 to £40 per m²), restricted access through a house (£300 to £600 typical), or a new linear drain (£250 to £500).

Decking

For a 15 to 20 square metre ground-level deck on a treated timber frame:

  • Treated softwood £140 to £200 per m²
  • Hardwood (Iroko, Balau) £220 to £300 per m²
  • Composite (Trex, Millboard) £240 to £340 per m²

Add for: raised decks (£60 to £120 per m² extra), balustrade and steps (typically £600 to £1,500 per run), or a sloping site that needs significant frame work.

Fencing

Fitted with concrete posts and concrete gravel boards:

  • Lap panel, 1.8m £100 to £130 per linear metre
  • Closeboard / featheredge, 1.8m £135 to £175 per linear metre
  • Picket fencing £90 to £120 per linear metre
  • Trellis topper, 30cm £25 to £40 per linear metre extra

Add for: removing and disposing of an old fence, gate built on site, or restricted access.

Garden design

Design fees vary depending on the size of the garden and the level of detail. Build is quoted separately.

  • Small garden refresh plan £400 to £800
  • Full design with planting plan £900 to £2,500
  • Full overhaul build (typical) £15,000 to £40,000+

Pricing FAQ

Why don't you publish fixed prices?

Two patios that look the same from a photo can cost dramatically different amounts depending on access, the state of the existing surface, the slabs you choose, and whether the ground drains. A fixed price either has to be high enough to cover every awkward case (so you overpay for an easy job) or low enough to undercut competitors (and then surprise costs appear). Itemised quotes after a site visit are fairer to both of us.

How do you charge?

Bigger jobs are quoted as a fixed total once I've seen the site. Materials and labour are listed separately on the quote. Smaller repair jobs sometimes work better on a day rate plus materials.

Do you ask for a deposit?

Yes. Usually a 25 percent deposit when the work is booked in to cover materials, then the balance on completion. For very large projects we sometimes split into stage payments.

Are quotes free?

Yes. Site visits and itemised quotes are free.

What if the price changes during the job?

If something unexpected comes up (rotten ground, a buried obstacle, a service that isn't where it's supposed to be) I'll always pause and ring you before any extra cost is incurred. There are never surprise charges on the final invoice.

Can you work to a fixed budget?

Yes, often. Tell me what you want to spend and I'll tell you honestly what's realistic for that budget. Sometimes the answer is to scale back the materials. Sometimes it's to do the job in two phases.

Want a real quote?

Site visits are free, no pressure. Tell me what you have in mind and I'll come round at a time that suits.
